Plaster homes always retain an amount of moisture as premixed sheetrock mud will always dissolve in water. Repairing plaster with premixed mud means you will be making the same repair again but with bad foreign debris mixed in with the problem. When fixing or refinishing plaster, the right materials are essential for a permanent repair.
~ Skim Coatings ~
If your plaster walls aged a bit too much having many nicks and scratches, or along with bits and pieces of wallpaper painted over leaving raised spots, a skim coat just may be what you're looking for. Skim coat quite simply is to apply thin layers of compound creating a new smooth surface. A great way to make old walls shine like new again!
~ Ceiling Overlays ~
If your plaster ceilings have multiple cracks, a spider web area of cracks, or has movement when applying pressure, an overlay could be your best choice. Our overlay process involves gluing the back side of the 3/8” drywall and securing the drywall to the joist using screws. Adding the use of glue helps distribute the weight more evenly greatly improving a permanent fix.

~ Blending Textures ~
In a percentage of plaster homes the original plasterer would add a subtle texture in their finish work. Now, many years later you have a repair needed and these walls have had years of paint coats and aging added to them. Here at DSC we know blending. It's not just recreating the texture, but aging it as well. A bad touch up texture can be an eyesore to you and shows a once damaged area to everyone else. Fixing someone else’s work is even harder. Don't take risky chances with your plaster walls. Get it repaired right the first time.
Interior walls of homes built before the 1950's are most likely made of plaster.
~ Quick Tip~
