The Secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) defined lead poisoning as the No. 1 environmental threat to the health of children in this country. In April of 2010 a new law was instituted by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) mandating any remodelers working in homes built before 1978 must be certified using safe lead-removal practices and test your home before working. The older your home is the higher the lead levels could be. This is not only on your walls, ceilings and trim, but also in lead-glazed ceramic tiles. Over time these things wear and disintegrate leaving harmful dust into the air.
Even though these requirements seem to have blind sided many people, don't risk you or your families health. Testing your home can done by your remodeler or if you want to know ahead of time stop by your local hardware store and ask for the lead test kits. It's easy and safe to get an early piece of mind.
